Built in 1889, the building has been preserved perfectly throughout the years. The name of the library comes after a multi-millionaire Englishman, John Rylands. He owned a textile company, Rylands & Sons. His achievement in this field inspired the foundation of the library. The library also stood as a memorial for him that was being initiated by her wife, Enriqueta Rylands. It was a public library until it merged with the University of Manchester library on July 1972.
